16" Hardwood Custom Double Plumb and Level, Brass Bound, Glass Windows, Brass Rings, Wire Vial Indicators. Carefully cleaned and refurbished.Level came to me best described as being gnarly and covered in red and black paint and a century of gunk. The last picture is a before, something I normally don't do. Several glasses were broken and both plumb vials were dry before weeks long refurbishment began. The layers of paint were carefully cleaned and stripped as there was no saving the finish. The finish is my interpretation of the gnarly, grungy character of this possibly user made masterpiece. If the owner made this, it is a fantastic job. I do not believe it was manufactured as the glass edges were chipped as if someone hand cut them and and chipped the edges to fit. The brass rings held the glass in place appeared to be a type of hog style ring. Staying with the red and black theme, dark red mahogany stain was layered to give depth and nitrocellulose lacquer was applied in multiple coats. New plumb vials were installed, wire indicators replaced, all glass is brand new and shout out to Andrew Glasswright, available here on eBay, who has been a reliable glass cutter for my work for many years. I am quite proud of how this turned out. When I got the level it had several broken glass port windows. Each glass was held in place with a brass ring, but also set in a thin layer of plaster. This required meticulous removal to replace the glass or the vial. The new glasses are set in place with a good fit and held exclusively by the brass ring. This allows for a slight rattle when handling, but also keeps the glass from breaking. If glass replacement becomes necessary, the rings are easily popped out, while the originals were difficult.
