An 18th Century oval Battersea Bilston English Enamel Motto Patch Box with a wonderful sentiment. When This you fee Pray think of me Tho many Miles we distant be. The SEE is written in old English using a f for an s. Two love doves decorating the top. The base is a Madam Pompadour Pink. The base is white as is the interior of the box. The inside lid has the original mirror. The box is in very good condition for being over 200 years old. Two small hairlines on the top, mentioned for accuracy. Some slight wear on the base which is to be expected. Bright Vibrant Colors. The hinges are good with a nice patina. The box closes good and tight. Measures approximately 1 ½” x 1 1/8” x ¾” tall. Pictured next to a quarter coin for scale. This Patch Box is English, enamel on copper. Circa 1790. ID: GEY Patches were the 18th century equivalent of beauty marks and were traditionally little pieces of gummed black silk taffeta or velvet used to draw attention to a particular facial feature and to flatter the complexion.
