1937 Trans-Pacific airmail 20c 50c FAM 14 Sc C21 and C22The 1937 Trans-Pacific 20¢ (Scott C21) and 50¢ (Scott C22) airmail stamps, known as the "China Clippers," were issued for expanded U.S. airmail routes to Hong Kong and China, featuring the iconic China Clipper seaplane and allowing for new postage rates. These stamps, printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, replaced the earlier C20, enabling faster, more direct mail service across the Pacific, with the 20¢ in green and the 50¢ in carmine. Key Details: Scott C21: 20¢, light green, featuring the China Clipper. Scott C22: 50¢, carmine, also featuring the China Clipper. Purpose: To cover new rates and destinations (Hong Kong, Macao, Guam) on the extended Trans-Pacific airmail service. Issue Date: February 15, 1937 (though service to China started March 24, 1937). Design: Both stamps used the same China Clipper design as the earlier 25¢ C20, but without the "November 1935" inscription, earning them the nickname "China Clippers". Significance: Marked a major step in early trans-Pacific airmail, facilitating communication between the U.S. and Asia.
