color on this hatpin, this is iridized. The hatpin is not signed. It is in good condition with no cracks or chips, edge roughness from the manufacturing process, see photos. It measures 1 3/4 inches wide, 1 1/4 inches log, and the pin measures 8 3/4 inches long. The pin is glued into the top and not original. The border around the beetle is 1/4 inch. The legs and feelers rest on the border. The word "Geshutzt" is printed on the back of some of these. Geshutzt is the German word meaning protected or patented. This piece is also well known to button collectors. The actual bug on this pin is a European cockchafer according to Dave Shetlar, entomologist.When hatpins were imported the tops and pins were not assembled together. They would have faced a larger import duty if they were assembled already. So they were assembled in the states. Thats why you find tops without pins. The pins were probably scrapped years ago and someone replaced them with steel rods. The manufacturing process for these would have been that they were pressed and snapped out of a mold that made more than one. The sides were ground to remove the extra glass then they were sprayed with metalic salt if they iridized them. Thats why sometimes they have flakes from the grinding process.
