This is a rare January 9th, 1939 program (playbill) from the two-week, Post-Broadway engagement of the JOHN STEINBECK play "OF MICE AND MEN" at the Chestnut Street Opera House in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (The production opened November 23rd, 1937 at the Music Box Theatre in New York City and ran for 207 performances before going on the road.) ..... The play starred CLAIRE LUCE and GUY ROBERTSON and featured EDWARD ANDREWS, JOHN F. HAMILTON, THOMAS FINDLAY, LESTER DAMON, GRANT MILLS, CHARLES SLATTERY, CLARENCE J. STRAIGHT, Jr. and LEIGH WHIPPER ..... CREDITS: Book by JOHN STEINBECK; Sets designed by DONALD OENSLAGER; Directed by GEORGE S. KAUFMAN; Produced by SAM H. HARRIS ..... DETAILS: The four page playbill measures 3" X 8 1/2" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes and advertising for the "Philadelphia Evening Ledger", but no cast photos or bios ..... CONDITION: (Please Note!) There are several tears, some paper loss and glue residue on the back that has bled through. Despite these flaws, this rare playbill will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
