Early in his career, Aaron had to deal with a lot of racism. In 1974, Aaron had 714 home runs total. To open the season, the Braves were playing the Cincinnati Reds in an away game. The manager wanted to bench Hank for the 3 games to let him hit No. 715 at home, in Atlanta. This was to surpass Babe Ruth's home run record. The umpires said he had to play 2 of the 3 games. When the team returned to Atlanta, he hit No. 715 off pitcher Al Downing. Bill Buckner climbed the fence, trying to catch the ball, but it was too high. Over 53,000 people witnessed the feat.
