We are offering a typewritten, signed letter dated August 24, 1961, from prominent artist and writer Rockwell Kent on his personal letterhead to Lewis Mumford, who was an internationally renowned writer on a wide variety of subjects. Kent thanks Mumford for his reply to his recent letter and declares his disappointment that Mumford will not be able to speak [apparently at some gathering or event].Rockwell Kent (1882-1971) - Kent's paintings were exhibited and sold in New York and Chicago galleries in the early 1900s. For the next several decades, he traveled to Newfoundland, Alaska and Greenland where he found inspiration from these rugged, rural locales for his visual art and his writings. He developed a stark, realistic landscape style in his paintings that revealed both nature's harshness and its sublimity. Kent's human figures, which rarely appear in his work, often signify mythic themes, such as heroism, loneliness, and individualism. Much more information on him can be found on the National Gallery of Art website.
