Offered for sale is a genuine Malabar Coast, Vira Raya gold fanam, dating to circa 1770–1800, an important and historic gold coinage of southern India.📜 Historical & Numismatic Description:Obverse: Stylized Shardula, a mythical Indian creature.Reverse: Stylized depiction of Varaha, the boar incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu.Fanams were first struck around A.D. 1450 in the southern Hindu kingdom of Vijayanagar, and over time became the standard high-denomination gold coin of southern India. These coins are admired for their highly stylized artistic designs, reminiscent of the abstract artistry seen on early Celtic coinage. This particular type is known as the Varaha (Boar) Fanam, named for the depiction of the Hindu god Varaha on the reverse. In Hindu tradition, Varaha was the third of the ten avatars of Vishnu, who rescued the earth after the demon Hiranyaksha dragged it to the bottom of the sea. Varaha fought the demon for a thousand years, ultimately slaying him and lifting the earth from the waters with his tusks. This is an extremely small and delicate gold coin, and it is remarkable that it has survived over 200 years without being lost.📌 Coin Details:Region: India – Malabar CoastRuler / Authority: Vira RayaDenomination: Gold FanamDate: Circa 1770–1800Metal: GoldType: Varaha (Boar) FanamCondition: Described in literature as Choice Very FineRarity: ScarceHolder: Coin only, exactly as shown📌 Important Notes:You will receive the exact coin picturedOriginal surfaces; no cleaning to my knowledge.Ships securely with tracking. No returns on bullion / ancient coin items.💥 A rare opportunity to acquire a historic Indian gold fanam with strong religious, artistic, and numismatic significance.
