I'm pleased to offer this specimen of Sphalerite with Pyrite and Galena from the Kidd mine, Timmins, Ontario, Canada. The specimen measures 3.55 x 2.60 x 1.88 inches or 9.01 x 6.61 x 4.79cm. This is from the Eric Laskowski (1949-2020) collection of Tucson, Arizona. Erich worked as a geologist in Colorado, California, and Arizona (chronologically) and I was able to purchase the bulk of his collection in April, 2021. He likely obtained this piece while studying geology at SUNY--New Paltz. He collected extensively in Ontario and Quebec during this time and did collect in this area. The specimen is largely sphalerite with minor dull brassy pyrite and hard-to-notice galena--there is at least one larger cleaved area on one side. The Kidd mine (formerly the Kidd Creek mine) was discovered in 1959 by Texas Gulf Sulfur Company and production finally began via open pit in 1966. It later transitioned to an underground mine--one of the deepest in the world. The mine exploits an enormous volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposit--these are typified by strataform massive sulfide mineralization generally rich in copper, lead, and zinc. They arise from the precipitation of sulfide minerals from hydrothermal vents on or near the sea floor. These are being formed today and so-called "black smokers" are an example of this process. The Kidd mine produces mostly copper, silver, and zinc from ores that average greater than 6% zinc, more than 2% copper, and nearly 90 grams of silver/ton. Ownership of the mine has changed hands more than a few times over the years and is now an important part of the Glencore portfolio headquartered in Switzerland. Please check my feedback and my other eBay items. All specimens are carefully wrapped, come with complete and accurate labels and are quickly shipped. As always, your complete satisfaction is unconditionally guaranteed and I even offer FREE return shipping on any item that fails to satisfy for any reason---you can't go wrong. I'm reminded of the firm pledge printed on the old Foote Mineral Company mineral catalogs from more than a century ago, "Quality of specimens is assured as we permit return of specimens at our expense." Thanks for looking! I buy collections! Please contact me if you have a collection for sale or know of one that is available. I will pay a finder's fee to anyone that can point me to an eventual purchase!
