Listing details

A photo album we found at an antiques auction in the Kansai area of Japan. There are 82 photos in this album. Some are enclosed with small corner pieces that hold them in place. These corner pieces are in the shape of an army helmet Others are attached from the back of the photo to the page. Most of the time the material used to attach the back of a photo to a page was rice starch. (Not glue)Rice starch is water soluble. (In case the buyer wants to take the photo out) We did not take any photos out to see if there is any writing on the backs. A few photos are loose in this book. We bought this at an antiques auction from when an older house was cleared out. Some of the pages have missing photos. It looks like the family or someone has taken some photos out of the book. All the photos seen here are in the book and will be received by the buyer. Many of the photos have a written description under them. (names, locations) There's a couple of photos of the emperor including one in which he's leaving what looks like Yasukuni Shrine. Some photos of a young princess leaving school with her friends and many military officers saluting them as they walk by. The last pages have photos of the imperial palace and various interior / exterior photos of large beautiful buildings. I wish there was some explanation of where the photos came from. My guess is the photographer was a professional war time photographer who had access to places and people ordinary people could not go to or visit. That may explain the missing photos. But why not take the whole book? Space in modern Japanese homes/condos is limited. But that's a guess on my part.We have been selling Japanese antiques for 27 years and are shipping from Los AngelesWe have other antique/vintage Japanese items on eBay. Please see our "Other" items.
