size 2"x2"x6".Gaboon Ebony is usually jet black with little or no variation or visiblegrain. Occasionally dark brown or grayish-brown streaks may be present. Ebonyhas a fine texture with mostly straight grain. Fine even texture with very high natural luster.Rot Resistance: Ebony is rated as being verydurable, with good resistance to termites and other insects.Workability: Can be difficult to work due to itsextremely high density. Has a dulling effect on cutters. Tearout may occur onpieces that have interlocked or irregular grain. Due to the high oil contentfound in this wood, it can occasionally cause problems with gluing. Finisheswell, and polishes to a high luster. Responds well to steam bending.Allergies/Toxicity: Although severe reactionsare quite uncommon, Ebony in the Diospyros genus has been reported as asensitizer. Usually most common reactions simply include eye, skin, andrespiratory irritation.The wood has been sealed with Paraffin wax to helpprotect against cracking. If you will be turning the wood, the wax doesn't needto be removed, it will come off naturally. Otherwise, scrub with a solvent,such as mineral spirits, to break the wax barrier. Follow with severalapplications of Acetone applied with gray scotch bright pads to scrub thesurface. Keep the wood in a controlled environment, cool, not too dry or hot.Use sharp tools and work slowly to generate minimal heat.
