The 30-kilometer exclusion zone and the zone of mandatory resettlement, which was designated the Chornobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve on 26 April 2016, has become a special kind of breeding reserve not only for common species of animal, but also for endangered ones. The lynx is one such rare species that are now hard to find in the wild. In the past, lynxes were widespread in Polesia (a natural and historical region that starts from the farthest edge of Central Europe, encompasses Eastern Europe, including Eastern Poland, the Belarus–Ukraine border, and Western Russia). But the destruction of forests and hunting by humans meant that the animal became rare as far back as the 19th century. Eurasian lynxes are on Ukraine’s list of endangered species. They are also protected under Appendix II of the Bern Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats, and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
