Otari MX-5050 2SHT, ¼” 2-track Tape Deck, Great Heads

Here is an Otari MX-5050 2SHT, it’s a solid machine. This one of the early MX-5050’s, it has a 2-track play head and a ¼-track home stereo play only head. These things are work horses and this one actually hasn’t seen a lot of work. I wanted to show you what it could do. So I loaded up my forty year old MRL test tape, set Ref 1KHz to 0 and let it run. It was flat from 64Hz to 16Khz, ±1 Db. I made a video of the Ref, top and bottom tones. You will hear a thumping from the tape, I don’t know; it must have gotten too close to a refrigerator magnet, or something, so I put another tape on so that you could hear it; no noise. This was going to be a personal machine, when I bought it ten years ago, well in that decade I believe that I have loaded three tapes on it, now I need the money much more that I need the machine. It runs at 15 and 7.5 ips and takes Large and Small reels. I am selling it as parts only. I do not have hold downs for small or NAB hubs. I just laid the machine flat, other problems are the output pots are scratchy, a lot of screws are corroded as are the shields around the heads, you can see this in the pixs. All of the tensions should be set, but hey, the counter works. Seriously, it works right now, it handles tape; you saw the freq response and, it’s an Otari.
