When her father, King George VI died in February, 1952, the 25 year old heiress became queen of seven independent Commonwealth countries including the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan, and Ceylon which is known today as Sri Lanka, as well as head of the Commonwealth. During her time as Queen, Elizabeth II met with more than 170 world leaders and 5 popes. Her reign of 70 years and 214 days was the longest of any British monarch and the longest verified reign of any female monarch in history. Her many historic visits and meetings included state visits to China in 1986, to Russia in 1994, and to the Republic of Ireland in 2011. Queen Elizabeth II died at Balmoral Castle, Aberdeenshire, in September 2022, at the age of 96, and was succeeded by her eldest son, Charles III. Her state funeral was the first to be held in the United Kingdom since that of Winston Churchill in 1965. Struck by Germany's Mayer Mint and released on behalf of the Cook Islands to pay tribute to the life and legacy of Queen Elizabeth II. This set features two proof coins, each with a $5 denomination. The first coin in the set has been struck from 1oz of fine silver and the other coin is struck from ½ g of gold. The obverse depicts Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of her majesty Queen Elizabeth II, encircled by the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II”, “COOK ISLANDS” and “5 DOLLARS”. The reverse design features another portrait of the Queen this one forward facing. Also included on the reverse are the inscriptions “IN MEMORIAM QUEEN ELIZABETH II” and the dates of her birth and death: “21st April 1926” and “8th September 2022”.
