Current strike United States Navy Expeditionary Medal. Authorized by the Navy Department on 5 August 1919 to members of the Navy for landings on foreign territory and operations against armed opposition for which no specific campaign medal has been authorized. Subsequent awards are denoted by a bronze star on the medal ribbon and service ribbon. For the December 1941 defense of Wake Island, a silver letter "W" is authorized for the ribbon bar and a "WAKE ISLAND" clasp for the medal drape. Current strike United States Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal. Authorized on 8 May 1919 as the Marine Corps Expeditionary Ribbon to members of the Marine Corps for landings on foreign territory and operations against armed opposition for which no specific campaign medal has been authorized. By Executive Order on 28 July 1921, the medal pendant was added. Subsequent awards are denoted by a bronze star on the medal ribbon and service ribbon. For the December 1941 defense of Wake Island, a silver letter "W" is authorized for the ribbon bar and a "WAKE ISLAND" clasp for the medal drape.
