Caused by the Paenibacillus popilliae bacteria, the milky spore disease targets the white larva of Japanese beetles. Adult beetles lay eggs in late summer that quickly hatch. In this larval stage, the young beetles live just under the surface and feed on the roots of grass and other plants and, if you've applied Milky Spore, ingest the bacteria. A few weeks later the host grub will no longer be able to support the ever multiplying milky spore and will die, releasing billions of new spores into the soil. Milky Spore is not harmful to people, animals, plants, or beneficial insects and is safe to use near waterways. One teaspoon should be applied every four feet in a checkerboard pattern. Can be applied anytime the ground is not frozen, but for optimal results apply in summer before adult beetles lay their eggs.
