SWIFT, MARCH 18 / 1870." - - "Richfield Springs suffered a great loss Monday, when one of its staunch friends and admirers passed away, in the person of Rear Admiral William B. Swift, U. S. N., retired. Admiral Swift had been an invalid for many months in Newport, R. I., at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Asserson, the wife of Surgeon Frederic Asserson, U. S. N., now on the Leviathian, but last week he was removed to the Naval Hospital in Newport, where an operation was performed, and where death occurred. Admiral Swift was about seventy years of age and belonged to the well known Connecticut family of Swifts. He was a line officer and had served with distinction, having the S. S. Connecticut for his flagship, at one time. During the Spanish-American War he was an expert on ordnance and later served on the general board. He was retired eight years ago on account of his age so he had no active part in the World War ... The funeral was held in Richfield Springs some time on Thursday and the interment was made in Lakeview Cemetery. Two daughters died several years ago and the surviving children are: Miss Virginia Swift of Richfield Springs, Mrs. Assterson of Newport, R. I.; Mrs. George Percival Auld, the wife of Paymaster Auld, U. S. N.; Justin Swift of Franklin, Pa., and Garfield Swift of Pittsburgh, Pa. There are also five grandchildren."
