Mata Ortiz Pottery Artist: Betty Guillen - Second Generation Hand Made Hand Painted Gorgeous Large Sized Pot With Intricate Colors And Checkerboard Design. The Exact Precision Of The Design Is Truly Fantastic. Piece Is Completed In The Charcoal & Blue Paquime' Style. This beautiful very large piece is a hand coiled olla that is hand made and signed by master potter, Bety Guillen who is from Mata Ortiz in Northern Mexico. Piece is handmade with ancient traditions from the village - pueblo of Mata Ortiz. The mixed clay is mined from the Sierra Marde Occidental mountain range, painted with handmade paints from natural pigments and hand coiled. This beautiful piece has the traditional Paquime geometric designs that would be a fantastic addition to any collection. All pieces are totally hand made clear down to gathering the clay - rinsing the clay to make useable - coil rolling the clay to start building the piece. Once piece is to that point then the potter starts the polishing getting ready for the hand painting or etching. Even small pieces take a lot of time before the finished product is ready. All the potters are so very proud of their creations and rightfully so. Artist Signed On Bottom Of Piece This Piece Has A Matching Pottery Ring That is Included With Purchase. MATA ORTIZ POTTERY STORY: Is a recreation of the Mogollon pottery found in and around the archeological site of Casas Grandes (Paquime') in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. Named after the modern town of Mata Ortiz, which is near the archeological site, the style was propagated by Juan Quezada Celado. Quezada learned on his own to recreate this ancient pottery and then went on to update it. By the mid 1970's, Quezada was selling his pottery and teaching family and friends to make it and the pottery was able to penetrate the U.S. markets thanks to traders. By the 1990's, the pottery was being shown in museums and other cultural institutions and sold in fine galleries. The success of the pottery, which is sold for aesthetic rather than its utilitarian value, has brought the town of Mata Ortiz out of poverty, with most of its populations earning income from the industry, directly or indirectly.
