Hi,I would like to offer an offset lithograph by Marc Chagall, published by George Braziller New York, for the prized "Daphnis and Chloe" series. (Lithographs from the series have been auctioned by such prestigious auction houses as Sotheby's – a photo of the auction catalog cover is attached.) The illustration was published with the author's permission in 1977 (during the artist's lifetime). It is printed on heavyweight paper, and the reverse side of the page is clean. The illustration has never been framed and is in very good condition. The photos at the auction show the graphic work and reflects its state of preservation.I send this illustation flatways, protected by thick carton. It comes from my personal collection and it is not the present-day reproduction.DETAILS:Author: Marc ChagallTitle: "Daphnis and Chloe"Title of artwork: "Chloe Dressed and Coiffured by Clearista"Method: Offset lithographDimensions: 12-5/8" x 9-3/8" (32.1 cm x 23.8 cm)Publisher: George Braziller, New York, USAPublication year: 1977Copyright: Les Editions Verve, Paris, 1961.About the series:In 1952, [Greek publisher, heir to A. Vollard] Tériade commissioned Chagall to illustrate the ancient romance "Daphnis and Chloe." It was probably the only work of the Greek rhetorician, grammarian, and scholar Longos, who wrote it in the second century CE. This tale, full of lyrical grace and sensual sincerity, was admired by Shakespeare and Goethe. It had a lasting influence on European literature. The first complete manuscript of "Daphnis and Chloe" was discovered only in 1810 in Florence. Chagall drew inspiration for the illustrations of this pastoral, set on the island of Lesbos, from Greece. In his lithographs, he depicted the Mediterranean kingdom of Pan and Eros, weaving motifs from the folklore of Russian Jews. The lovers are depicted here in Chagall's characteristic ornate style and in a colorful setting that evokes Eden."
