Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome. You are looking at a gorgeous vintage 1960's era Electro Voice 674 model Dynamic Cardioid microphone with the adjustable bass setting / drop off switch, lower pistol grip and short cable in which to operate. This mic has been thoroughly gone over and all issues addressed. If you demand a perfect working 674 with zero issues then this is your mic. Pic # 2 shows this very mic as well as several others in an old E.V catalog. This was an ideal mic for singing and broadcasting as designed. It has excellent uni-directional characteristics and gave the user extra length to work with once mounted. It should be noted right away that this mic was factory set to high impedance by Electro Voice. More on that in a moment. The 674 was basically a 676 model but the 676 was meant to be handheld or placed in a mic clip as where the 674 was used more for being mounted on a stand. Ideal for broadcasting or for singing if you wanted to make sure the mic wouldn't fall off the stand.Jim Morrison (from The Doors) used the 676 model mic for many years while performing live. The 674 and 676 used the exact same dynamic cardioid elements and were 100% identical in tone. The 674 was only sold for about 15 years before being discontinued but it's still one of the most desirable model mics from the 1960's and 70's having a great tone and excellent frequency response. A gain, this mic was factory set for High Z and you'll have to use the short cable provided. The 674 will give you a decent amount of bass but this mic also has the bass drop off lever on the bottom of the handle allowing you to adjust the tone of the mic easily. Again, it's 100% signal strength and has zero issues. If you try to use a standard 4 pin Low Z cable on this mic it will not work because again, the mic itself was factory set for hi Z. Thought the 676 and 674 are technically dual Z mics the mics were often set to either Low Z or High Z and once that was done within the mic itself you could not just use any 4 pin cable. The cable has to be set to the impedance of the mic so the short cable provided is set to Hi Z. Hi Z setting gives the mic a dirtier tone that I equate to "rockabilly". It's not bass heavy like a Low Z mic. If you like the dirtier "rockabilly" old school sound then this mic will be perfect for you. Also great for a HAM radio set up as many HAM radios are Hi Z. If you want a 674 with more of a natural warm tone then the Low Z 674 is the way to go. The good news id that you can simply leave the short cable screwed onto the mic at all times and attach any longer XLR cable of choice as an extension. As long as you have the short cable provided you'll never have an issue using this mic. The cable is just 8 inches long. Soft, pliable and in excellent shape. I built the cable myself so it's good to go for decades to come. It has the quality Switchcraft male XLR end connector. This microphone came in both the polished chrome body as well as the painted body and as you can see in the pics provided that this chrome example has just a couple cosmetic flaws. It's free of any pitting or dents but there is a small engraving on the lower pistol grip and a couple tiny nicks on the upper tube. The mic is solid and I'd rate it a true 8 on a scale of 1 - 10. The front screen has no deformation or odors. One tiny spot of tarnish. Even the E.V badge looks very nice. I added a new inner pop filter as the original was all but degraded and it helps with sound characteristics. If you need a superb 674 for the daily...look no further.
