Gunma Prefecture, Japan. Circa the 1980s. Bears a hanko seal on the bottom. A gorgeous vintage kokeshi by Toa Sekiguchi. It is titled "Izayoi" (十六夜), which in Japanese means "Sixteenth Night." The phrase refers to the 16th night of the lunar month, counted after the full moon, when the light starts to wane. The 16th night holds significant importance in Japanese culture, particularly in the tradition of Otsukimi (moon viewing). The Izayoi is a time for reflection and appreciation of the moon's beauty and the beauty of the surrounding nature. The artistic motif of Izayoi is masterfully captured in this iconic piece by Master Toa. This is a large, visible kokeshi - it measures 5.5 inches in height and weighs 1.7 lb (762 g). Toa SekiguchiSekiguchi-san was born in 1942 in Shibukawa City, Gunma Prefecture into a family of prominent kokeshi craftsmen. He is the son of the iconic sosaku artist Sansaku Sekiguchi (who has his own kokeshi museum in Gunma).Toa Sekiguchi is an accomplished sosaku Master in his own right. He started out as an independent maker in the 1980s. He is the winner of many artistic competition awards, including the prestigious Prime Minister's Award in 2001 (for the work titled "Hope.") His works are diverse in style and are highly regarded by collectors.K255B
