G. Oliver Koppell, the Democratic New York politician and Harvard Law graduate, is best known for his campaigns for New York Attorney General in 1994 and 1998. Koppell was first appointed Attorney General in December 1993 by the New York State Legislature to fill the unexpired term of Robert Abrams, during which he initiated dozens of public interest lawsuits, collected over $100 million for the state treasury, and negotiated the largest environmental settlement in New York history. In 1994, Koppell sought a full term as attorney general but lost to Judge Karen Burstein in the Democratic Primary, finishing ahead of Brooklyn District Attorney Charles "Joe" Hynes and a then little-known prosecutor named Eliot Spitzer. He ran again in 1998 for the Democratic nomination for attorney general, finishing third behind Spitzer — who went on to win — and State Senator Catherine Abate. Despite falling short of winning a full term, Koppell's tenure and campaigns for New York Attorney General cemented his reputation as a public interest champion and influential figure in New York Democratic politics.
