UNUSUAL ITEM & an interesting story of the creator - Approx 3 1/2” x 1” relic mounted on a 2 1/4” x 4” board.“Steel Chip from 16 inch Naval Gun U. S. Navy Yard Washington D.C. Compliments of John T. Unger Jr 4812 N 24 Road Arlington, VA.”His father - John T. Unger Sr was born in 1876. He was a Veteran of The Spanish American War. He worked as a Machinist at The US Navy Yard in Washington D.C. from approximately 1910 to around WWII. Died Jan 1950. Buried at Arlington National Cemetery.Perhaps a father-son project to keep junior busy as there are no employment records of him in the Census records. John jr was born in 1909 & suffered from Epilepsy most of his life, averaging 100 seizures a year. In 1953 at 43 years old he entered the operating room at National Institute of Health for the first surgery at NIH of a temporal craniotomy. Operation was a success, relieving him of his symptoms.
