Fantastic and very rare single-page typed Japan Surrender Letter dated September 2, 1945, from Sailor aboard USS DeHaven DD-727 (Destroyer) that was present in Tokyo Bay during the signing aboard the USS Missouri. The letter was prepared and pre-printed by the Ship and then sailors would fill-in recipient's name and sign it. They then would address the cover which also received the Tokyo Bay Postmark on the historic date to help authenticate. We researched the Sailor, Samuel J. Engel and discovered he was born 1911 and joined the Navy in 1943. He was discharged or released in Nov. 1945 and passed in 1983. He was a 'R/T' Radio Transmitted 3rd Class. We're sure he served his country admirably. He signed the letter Your Uncle so recipient must have been a fairly young boy (in NJ). Wood framed and matted (no glass) and measures 1525 x 21.75" overall with wire on back to hand again. It has been well preserved with some fading to the letter and toning along edges of cover. Frame is basic but it very likely kept item from being lost - and we cannot find another like this from the DeHaven which was also instrumental in several WW2 battles and Korean War.
