2 lbs of raw, unwashed, unprocessed Sheep Wool Fleece, from the FireFly Farm flock of South Hero, Vermont. This listing is for Spinning, Stuffing & Felting grade wool. This wool is taken from the center of 2nd grade fleeces, or from good fleeces where there is more lanolin or the lanolin has hardened/set. Also may include the best of the lower fleece after skirting. It has variable staple and crimp, but most samples have good length and the wool washes out airy and bouncy after scouring. It feels very nice to work with. Expect it to wash out to a light cream or creamy white. It's ideal for uses where bright white wool is not needed or preferred. This wool is raw, unwashed, in the grease, just as it was shorn from the sheep, without cleaning or processing. Belly, tag and "green" wool is separated and discarded. It will not include any feces contaminated wool. Some samples may have some wax, which scours out readily, or light staining. I pick out as much vegetable matter as I can as I process orders. Some fleeces have more fine debris, which I find drops out well during scouring and carding. Our flock is pure Tunis and Tunis crossed with Horned Dorset/Suffolk cross sheep. You can see our sheep enjoy a nice life on beautiful pasture in Vermont’s lovely Champlain Islands. Our sheep are well fed and cared for, and our winters are cold, so we grow heavy fleeces of healthy wool of good staple length. The wool is mostly medium grade, well suited to hard wearing applications of heavier yarns like rugs etc, or felting and other fiber craft projects. Some knitters enjoy Tunis wool for mittens and socks especially. This wool may include lamb's wool and some finer fleeces. Most of our flock have a fleece with a fine crimp and good luster, though there is quite a bit of variation from sample to sample. Staple is around 3 to 5 inches, depending on which sheep the fleece came from, and which part of the fleece. Average staple is about 4 inches.**Please bear in mind that this is raw unwashed fleece, so there is often quite a bit of lanolin in it, and fine hay or dry debris. I find the lanolin washes out well, and any remaining debris separates well during carding. I recommend Orvus Paste Soap for scouring wool. It works wonders. Thanks for looking – enjoy your wool and please ask any questions you may have.– Colin at FireFly Farm
