To learn more about us please click on our profile Acquired together with our web # 44800 (a large miniature portrait of Governor-General of Austrian Netherlands (now Belgium) - Prince Charles Alexandre of Lorrain), this miniature, executed in the same technique of tempera painting on paper, (and, as we believe, in the same year 1766), is also an extremely rare work (no other can be found on the current antiques market and in the auction records of the last 50 years!) of Brussels miniaturist working at the court of the Prince of Lorrain from 1761, Joseph Grégoire Sauvage (1733-after 1787).The sitter of this portrait is Maria-Theresia's plenipotentiary minister in the Austrian Netherlands (appointed still in 1783), head of Prince Charles Alexandre of Lorrain's administration in that Austrian province, Count Johann Karl Philipp von Cobenzl (1712-1770 Brussels; see our images with other portraits and the extensive biography of his). On our miniature, he is depicted in the gala costume of the Austrian Royal Order of the Golden Fleece (awarded in 1759).Joseph Gregoire Sauvage, who never married, lived with his mother after the death of his father and teacher Jean-Pierre Sauvage (both were portraitists at the Brussels court at the time, the father worked in oils, the son was a miniaturist) in 1780. In 1787, his mother wrote to the then Governor General of the Austrian Netherlands, Archduke Albert of Saxe-Teschen, requesting that her son, who was suffering from "nervous fever", be admitted to the Saint-Pierre Hospital in Brussels.Provenance: US antiques trade Visit our store here on eBay for other works by this artist.
