ANTIQUE FRENCH GILT BRONZE HAND PAINTED PORTRAIT JEWELRY BOX CASKET VELVET LINED On offer is a nice example of the genre sold in the fancy shops located on or near the Rue de Palais Royal in the 19th century to travelers on their Grand Tour. The bronze has picked up a nice patina over the centuries. There is a small amount of verdigris particularly in the crevices of the appliqué embellishments. The lid is centered with a well-done miniature hand painted portrait under glass. There appears to be a partial signature on the lower left, the remainder of which has been obscured by the frame. NOTE: There is a very minimal non-consequential loss to the paint on the portrait on the left side. Otherwise condition of the metal is just fine. Interior velvet lining remains fully intact, to cradle your precious jewelry. The lid fits snugly / tightly into the base. The box is unmarked. However these boxes are French, whether marked so or not. The McKinley Tariff Act of 1891 required country of origin markings but anything sold prior to that might be unmarked. Additionally, markings were required for items intended for export and subsequent import into the U.S. Therefore any such items purchased in France by tourists and brought home in their luggage would be unmarked. We have many more similar antique boxes (see last 2 images for partial offerings), some with porcelain or enamel portraits, and will list them as time allows. If you collect these, please save our shop and subscribe so you will know as soon as we list them.HAPPY TO COMBINE SHIPPING WITH ITEMS THAT CAN TRAVEL SAFELY TOGETHER.
