Listing details

Baltimore & Ohio Railroad 4-8-2 locomotive No. 727 in the Cleveland, Ohio yardsBaltimore & Ohio Railroad locomotive No. 727 is seen here in the Cleveland, Ohio yards. Four hopper cars are in the background on the hump. The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad (reporting marks B&O or simply BO) is one of the oldest railroads in the United States and the first common carrier railroad. Construction began on July 4, 1828 and at first this railroad was located entirely in the state of Maryland with an original line from the port of Baltimore west to Sandy Hook. Later expansion extended to adjacent states and a steel and stone bridge was built across the Ohio River between Bellaire, Ohio and Wheeling, West Virginia in 1871, connecting the B&O to the Central Ohio Railroad, which the B&O had leased starting in 1866. This provided a direct rail connection to Columbus, Ohio, and the lease marked the beginning of a series of expansions to the west and north. At the end of 1970 B&O operated 5552 miles of road and 10449 miles of track. This high quality 5 x 7 photo is brand-new and has been originally reproduced from a transparency or negative. It has been printed on glossy photo paper, and sent from a smoke-free environment. Be sure to see my other listings as many railroad photos are available. Thank you!
