Listing details

On offer, we have an original ink drawing famous illustrator Margaret Ely Webb (1887-1965). "All lovely tales that we have heard or read an endless fountain of immortal drink pouring unto us from the heaven's brink" is meant to be a fantasy Arts & Crafts bookplate for Elsie Margaret Storke. The back has a handwritten label "Original drawing for my bookplate by my step grand aunt, Margaret Ely Webb, one of the most distinguished American bookplate artist's". This measures 11 1/4" X 10". In its black wood frame, this is 14 1/2" X 12 1/2" X 3/8" and weighs 1 pound 5.3 ounces. About the subject: Margaret Ely Webb made bookplates for most of the prominent Santa Barbara Storke family. Research tells me Elsie Margaret Storke lived from 1908 until 1918, so the label was written for her by an adult. About the artist: "Webb was an important figure in the Arts and Crafts movement of the early 1900s. She was known for her intricate, pen-and-ink bookplate designs. According to the Santa Barbara Independent, "one critic, writing in August 1908, confessed that the beauty of Webb’s plates had shattered his prejudice against women artists." Webb created bookplates for notable Santa Barbarans, including her step-brother, Thomas M. Storke. She made the illustrations for Florence Converse's The House of Prayer (1908) which was reprinted numerous times as well as the Aldine Readers and Primer series. In the 1940s, Webb took up woodblock printing as a medium for bookplates. She also painted watercolors and oils. Webb is primarily remembered for her work as an illustrator of children's literature."(Wikipedia). I believe this is in very good condition considering its age. The drawing is bold and clear with many white-out corrections. I see 4 tiny age spots. The frame has a thin crack on the right side. This has not been examined out of the frame. As I am not an expert on art, please see my photographs for more description. This is from my friend who is moving to a much smaller home and parting with many of his treasures. I will be happy to answer any questions and, of course, combine your shipping.
