The Black Sea and the Sea of Azov play a crucial role in preserving the region’s biodiversity, maintaining ecological equilibrium, and ensuring the country’s economic stability. Among the many inhabitants of these waters are the hermit crab (Diogenes pugilator) and the round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) – species that serve as bioindicators of the condition of the marine environment, and are important elements of the marine ecosystems. With this set, the NBU aims to draw attention to the problem of marine preservation, remind humanity of its responsibility for the protection of natural resources, and empha

size the significance of marine biota in shaping Ukraine’s ecosystem.Obverse of the coin dedicated to the Sea of Azov: in the center of the composition is a stylized contour of the Sea of Azov with the adjacent territory of Ukraine, executed in the form of relief horizontal lines that imitate sea waves. Above, to the right, is Ukraine’s small state coat-of-arms, under which are the coin’s issue year 2025 (placed horizontally) and the legend УКРАЇНА (Ukraine) (placed vertically). Beneath are the coin’s face value 5, the graphic symbol of the hryvnia and the mint mark of the NBU’s Banknote Printing and Minting Works. At the bottom of the composition are the following semicircular legends: АЗОВСЬКЕ МОРЕ and THE SEA OF AZOV. Reverse: there are two round gobies (an element decorated with

color printing) in their natural habitat – on a sandy-silty bottom among rocky fragments and aquatic vegetation. In the foreground, a clutch of eggs is shown, emphasizing the species’ reproductive function and its ecological significance.
