VERY RARE ORIGINAL VINTAGE PUBLICITY PHOTO for JOHN WAYNE, then working for FOX Studios (circa 1929-30). This photo was numbered and was produced long before he became a legend in Hollywood. Note the designation at the base of the photograph, "FOX MOVIETONE PICTURES". The term "Movietone" was used to describe the process where a sound stripe was attached to the picture on film. For the first few years of sound movies, Movietone Pictures was used to market the motion picture studio. After 1930, Movietone was dropped from the name and the studio was called "FOX FILMS"--and then later, "TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX" after the merger of the two studios. After 1930, the term "Movietone" was exclusively used for the production of news reels and this practice continued for decades. At the beginning of his film career, Wayne appeared in a number of silent films in small parts, many of them uncredited. The designation Movietone Pictures, means the photo can be attributed to the early days of talking pictures (1928-1930) with 1930 being most likely (this was the first year he starred as a leading man in a motion picture). This photo is in VERY GOOD-FINE condition with a small chunk out of the white border at the bottom right corner tip. There is a vertical 2 1/2" tear at the lower right that touches Wayne's jacket edge (see photos). This tear has pieces of magic tape on the back of the photograph. This publicity photo came from a collection of 300 publicity photos and production stills running from the late days of silent pictures (1927) up to 1935. Notes and documents that came with the collection indicate they once belonged to, and were used by a celebrity publication such as a newspaper or magazine located somewhere in New York. Shipping is $5.00 to the United States. Shipping will be combined for multiple purchases. I have lots of Golden, Silver and Bronze comics for sale.
