Description:Please find for offer a carved wood & polychrome statue of the Madonna & Child, dating to the late 19th century. This finely carved statue depicts the Madonna with glass eyes and a brass halo, dressed in robes and holding the Christ child in her arms. The Madonna is stood upon a serpent that is coiled around a globe, representing Mary triumphing over sin. The piece has a polychrome finish with the Madonna's robes painted in blue, pink and gilded details. The Christ child has glass eyes and is dressed in pink with gilded details. The statue is fixed upon an octagonal gilded base.Dimensions:Height: 42.5cm including halo. Width: 13.5cm. Depth: 12.6cm.Condition:Christ is missing both hands and a foot. Madonna is missing one hand and has some chips to her crown. There are multiple areas of loss to the polychrome throughout revealing the wood beneath and making the statue slightly “distressed” condition. Two small pieces of the back of base missing. Despite the condition issues the statue displays well. Age related wear as expected. Overall good.
