The note features detailed engraving typical of mid-19th century American banknote design. At the center is an allegorical vignette incorporating the South Carolina state seal, with classical figures representing liberty and justice. The right side of the note features a detailed steam locomotive vignette, symbolizing industrial growth and the expansion of rail transportation in the American South. The note also displays a distinctive green patent tint, an early security printing feature designed to deter counterfeiting. Engraving credit at the bottom identifies the note as the work of Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson, one of the most prominent engraving houses producing obsolete currency during the pre-Civil War period.
