William Augustine Washington, George’s nephew and then heir, proceeded to salvage the bricks and use them in the construction of his new home known as Haywood plantation 2 miles north on the Potomac River. Today, due to coastal erosion, nothing remains of Haywood except a rubble strewn field of bricks on the bottom of the Potomac River. A very small amount of these bricks have been rescued by underwater salvage crews.
