PUNU mask, pronounced "pounou". The Punu form a "Bantu" people of Central Africa established primarily south of Gabon. Social cohesion is ensured by the society "Moukanji" whose essential role is to subjugate the evil spirits of the forest. A top shell with side duvets, this striated hairstyle depicts the braided mats of Punu women. Eyes in thin slit eyelids arched in coffee beans, lips hemmed in red. The "mabinda" checkerboard scarifications on the forehead symbolize the nine clans that originally formed the Kongo Kingdom. The focal point is the creative spirit, inscribed on the forehead and temples, this Mabinda statuette on the belly. For the masks they were exhibited during rituals of very ancient origins during which dancers mounted on stilts of 2 to 3 meters and covered in a foliage suit and cloth cloth cloth cloths, agitated in order to invoke the spirit of the deceased. Statues are traditionally worn at funeral ceremonies, or placed on altars, and commemorative rituals to honor the deceased and facilitate their transition to the world of ancestors.
