Their first big breakthrough there was Grand Casino Gulfport, which opened in May 1993 as a large riverboat casino and hotel complex, boasting lavish amenities. Over the 1990s the company expanded rapidly, opening several Grand Casinos properties in both Gulfport and Biloxi, making Grand Casinos one of the fastest‑growing casino operators in the U.S. at the time. However, the company’s Mississippi coastal properties suffered devastating damage during Hurricane Katrina in 2005 — in particular, the Grand Casino Gulfport’s casino barge was washed ashore and had to be destroyed, and some assets were sold off instead of being rebuilt. Grand Casino Biloxi was completely destroyed. It has been rebuilt as a land based casino called Harrah's Gulf Coast. After Katrina, changes in gaming law allowed casinos to move from barges or water to land, which influenced how reconstruction and redevelopment proceeded. Over time many of the former Grand Casinos properties were either rebranded, sold, converted into other casinos (or destroyed), so the original “Grand Casino” name mostly lives on in memories and historic accounts of Mississippi’s gambling‑boom era. What is a Silver Strike?A Silver Strike is a Limited Edition Gaming Token which is won from a special slot machine in a protective plastic holder.
