Photograph Notes: St Bernards Well on the water of Leith. The story goes that the mineral springs were re-discovered by three boys from Heriots Hospital about 1760 while they were fishing. The legend, well known by locals, is that it was first discovered by Saint Bernard in the 1100AD. He drank the water then became well as he was a very sick man. The architect was Alexander Naismyth whose designed a statue of Hygeia in the centre. The interior has a mosaic floor with ornate mosaic domed ceiling and gilded sun-face with pierced ventilation holes.
