Listing details

This is a rare opportunity to own a 1950's manufactured spinning reel made in America that has never been owned, displayed, used, or fished, that can be called "Mint" in its original 2 piece factory box called the Swiss Whiz Challenger. It is my understanding that Spinning reels were introduced to America around 1937, but did not "take off" until after World War II.In the early 1950's Fishing experts estimated that there were over 200 types of spinning reels that were appearing in the American market, and at least 50 more anticipated. ( imported reels were flooding the market, with a 30 percent import tax ) The term Ultra- Lite probably was not used in advertising but light weight or just plain spin fishing was commonly used. Curiously, in a 1953 publication "Spin Tackle Fishing", by Lee Harter and Tom Carlite, the authors called "Spinning" in America - ULTRA -LIGHT TACKLE FISHING!. Long before the term Ultra-Lite was cool and trendy, The Champ and Challenger reels were advertised and recommended for a monofiliment or nylon braided line from from 4 to 6 lbs, and their interchangeable spools were advertised as having a capacity of 200 yards of a 4 lb test line, with a 5 ounce reel weight. In the same publication 24 fresh water reels were highlighted, and the Myco Swiss Whiz was one of them. Quoting "the Swiss Whiz is a practical, inexpensive spinning reel which will hold about 200 yards of four pound test line, American made, it features an automatic bail pickup, adjustable tension drag, and is easily changed from right to left hand wind by reversing the post."This reel was recently unpacked from the original factory cardboard shipping box, that has been in storage for decades! The date on the Detroit newspaper that was used in the shipping carton for the reels was dated 1953. The graphics and

color on the reel box are clean and crisp. The reel is black and gold. The literature may be slightly discolored and spotted, and original GREEN/YELLOW/ BLACK- 2 PIECE box may have some very slight small scratches. (probably from moving the shipping carton over the years) The reel box is approx. 4'" x 4.5" The Challenger does not have anti-reverse. "CHALLENGER " is inscribed on the reel. In addition to the original factory box and literature there is an extra gold interchangeable line spool. A great vintage spinning reel for collectors or the ultra light enthusiast, or for the new fisherperson. Made in the USA, in Detroit Mich by MYCO Inc at1640 E. 9 MIle Road Detroit Mi.I will wrap and pack the reel with care, while using the best packaging options to reduce shipping costs safely. We have taken the reel out of the box and wiped it with a clean towel, and aired out the box for some time, most reels spin freely, but others appear a little sluggish. They may need new lubrication after 70 years of sitting on a shelf in a cardboard box.I am not an expert on anything so please email any questions you may have on the reelprior to bidding. Thanks for looking, check out the other reels up for auction.FEATURESMADE IN THE USALIGHTWEIGHT APPROX. 5 OZINTERCHANGEABLE RIGHT OR LEFT HAND WINDFINGERTIP CONTROLAUTOMATIC PICKUP AND ADJUSTABLE DRAGNO DISASSEMBLING FOR CLEANING OR LUBRICATIONSPECIAL NYLON GEAROILITE BEARINGNEW PICK UP BAIL HARD CHROMEDTEMPERED NYLON SPOOL FRONTINTERCHANGEABLE LINE SPOOLSCOTCH YOKE CROSS WINDNON-CORROSIVE EXPOSED PARTS- ALUMINUM, CHROME, STAINLESS STEELQUALITY BEVEL GEARS RATIO 2.88/1All international sales to be handled thru Ebay International Shipping Program.
